How to measure (quick guide)

Diagram showing where to measure: neck (base of neck), body length (base of neck to centre of crotch), chest (widest point), waist (natural waist), under arm (armpit to wrist), thigh (top of thigh), inside leg (crotch to ankle).
Take measurements snug to the body (not tight). Prefer cm; inches in brackets are fine.

Use a soft tape measure. Measure snug to the body, not tight. If the garment will be worn over a nappy or pad, measure over it. Prefer centimetres (cm); inches in brackets are fine. 1 inch = 2.54 cm.

  • Neck: around the base of the neck where a collar sits.
  • Body length: on the back from the base of the neck to the centre of the crotch.
  • Chest: around the fullest part of the chest, tape under the arms, parallel to the floor.
  • Waist: around the natural waist (roughly in line with the belly button).
  • Under arm (sleeve): from armpit to wrist bone with the arm relaxed.
  • Thigh: around the very top of the thigh.
  • Inside leg: from the crotch to the ankle bone (for shorts, measure to desired hem).

Which measurements we usually need

  • Bodysuits / popper vests: Body length & Chest.
  • Trousers / pyjamas: Waist & Inside leg (add Thigh if a closer fit is needed).
  • Tops / jackets: Chest & Under arm (sleeve).
  • Swimwear: Waist (and Hips if applicable) & Thigh for leg openings. See Choosing the Correct Swimwear.

Tips if measuring is tricky

  • Measure a well-fitting garment laid flat (then double the width for chest/waist).
  • Use a piece of string around the body; lay it against a ruler/tape afterwards.
  • Do two short attempts at different times and take an average.
  • For sleeves, measure while the child is seated with the arm relaxed.
