St Margaret of Castello – A Saint for Every Child

Feast Day: 13 April ~ Patron Saint of people with disabilities, the marginalised, and the unwanted

At Fledglings, we believe that every child deserves to be seen, valued and included. That’s why we want to take a moment to share the story of someone who speaks deeply to the heart of many families we support: St Margaret of Castello.

Born in 1287 with multiple disabilities – she was blind, had curvature of the spine, and walked with difficulty – Margaret was hidden away by her noble family, who were ashamed of her differences. For much of her early life, she was isolated, kept behind closed doors, even walled into a room beside a chapel. Later, she was abandoned at a shrine when prayers for her healing weren’t answered.

But Margaret’s story didn’t end there. Despite unimaginable rejection, she found love, friendship, and belonging in the most unexpected places — in communities who saw her not for what she lacked, but for who she truly was. She lived a life filled with kindness, prayer, and compassion for others on the margins. She supported people in need, cared for the sick, and became a beacon of hope to many.

In 2021, Margaret was officially recognised as a saint. But to many families, especially those walking alongside children with disabilities, she was already a powerful source of comfort and strength. Her story reminds us that a person’s worth isn’t measured by appearance, ability or recognition — but by love.

Whether you’re caring for a child with additional needs, supporting a young adult navigating the world differently, or walking your own journey of advocacy and acceptance, St Margaret stands beside you. She is a quiet presence of empathy and solidarity — a reminder that you are not alone.

On her feast day, 13 April, we remember and honour St Margaret of Castello. Not with fanfare, but with gentle gratitude for the light she brings into lives that sometimes feel unseen.

“The smallest light can shine brightest in the darkest place.”

St Margaret lived a life full of challenge, yet met it with faith, gentleness and unwavering compassion. She reminds us that every life – no matter how hidden, complex or different – holds incredible worth.

Today, may you feel seen.
May your child or loved one be cherished, not only by you but by a world slowly learning to love better.
May you know you are not alone in the hard days – and that even small kindnesses matter deeply.

As you pause, perhaps light a candle, take a breath, or whisper a prayer in your own words.

St Margaret walks beside families like yours – not to preach, but to be present.
